Not So Fun Facts About Hell

Hell

Last time I wrote about the Biblical description of Heaven. This time I am writing about the Biblical description of Hell. Here is some of what the Bible says about Hell:

Hell is eternal torture.

-And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” (Jesus in Matthew 25:46)

Hell is described as a place of 1) Fire, 2) Thirst, and 3) Extreme Heat.

-and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ (Luke 16:23-24)

Hell is described as 1) darkness, 2) a place of weeping, and 3) gnashing of teeth.

-I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Jesus in Matthew 8:11-12)

Hell is described as a place full of worms (which are implied to be eternally feeding on the flesh of the damned).

-And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell,‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’ (Mark 9:47-48)

Hell was created as a place to punish the Devil and his angels. Hell was not originally intended for humans.

-Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.’” (Jesus in Matthew 25:41)

The Devil is not in charge of punishing people in Hell. He is punished in Hell like the rest of the damned.

-and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. (Revelation 20:10)

There are only two destinations in eternity: Heaven and Hell. There is no third option, such as purgatory or limbo.

-And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. (Daniel 12:2)

You only get one life before judgement in front of God. There is no reincarnation. You die and then you are judged and placed in Heaven or Hell. Their is no chance to repent and go to Heaven after you die. You have to repent before you die.

-it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment (Hebrews 9:27)

Far more people go to Hell, than go to Heaven.

-Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” (Jesus in Matthew 7:13-14)

All Christians go to Heaven. All non-Christians go to Hell.

-Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6)

Hell is something Christians worship God for, because Hell is God’s final victory over Satan and his followers.

-Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “So will Babylon the great city be thrown down with violence, and will be found no more” … After this I heard what seemed to be the loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, crying out, “Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, for his judgments are true and just; for he has judged the great prostitute who corrupted the earth with her immorality, and has avenged on her the blood of his servants.” Once more they cried out, “Hallelujah! The smoke from her goes up forever and ever.” (Revelation 18:21 & 19:1-3)

  1. You’re only describing the new testaments version of hell. Unless it changed from what hell was in the old testament, which would just make absolutely no sense, I think the new testaments description of hell is simply to make people afraid so that they can be more easily controlled by the early church. Interestingly enough, early Judaism which is the underpinnings of all Abrahamic religions had no actual concept of hell. I think it’s pretty interesting food for thought.

    • You obviously did not read all of the post. I included Daniel 12:2 in the original post.

      • Include, exclude, leave in, leave out, contradict this, contradict that, it’s all part of the same show. Old testament, new testament, which is real? Which am I supposed to follow? Old religion? New religion? Which is the right religion? Do I stone my neighbor or love him? Do I take what some man wrote centuries ago over what modern geniuses write today? Boggles my mind. You’re beautiful and I love you, but I’m quite honestly not sold on your hell.

    • Also I’m not sure what you consider to be early Judaism, but Jesus was a Jew. And he had a very solid concept of Hell.
